THEOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923) [HELLE.] 1896.
31 5/8x23 3/4 inches.
Condition A. Framed.
Steinlen designed two posters advertising operas. For La Reve he chose an Japanese oriented theme and here, for Alphonse Duvernoy's Helle he employs a classical Greek theme. Although the image represents the singer Rose Caron in the role of Canitlene, very little other knowledge remains of this production. This poster is little appreciated by the contemporary market, but was extremely popular when it was first printed. In 1896 Ed. Sagot issued deluxe editions of this poster on Japan paper which he offered for sale for 15 francs. This was the same price he was asking for a special print of Mucha's Salon des Cent. This is the version before letters. Bargiel 25A2, Crauzat 497, DFP-II 789, Maitres 45, Steinlen 80, Reims 1029.
